Rubbing your eyes is something most of us do without thinking—whether from tiredness, allergies, or irritation. While it may bring a moment of relief, frequent or forceful eye rubbing can actually harm your eyes and even affect your vision.

When you rub your eyes, you apply pressure on the delicate structures inside them. This can temporarily blur your vision, but repeated rubbing may cause more lasting problems. One major concern is a condition called keratoconus, where the normally round cornea becomes thin and bulges outward. This can lead to distorted vision. Eye rubbing is considered a key risk factor in the development and progression of keratoconus.

In addition, rubbing increases the chance of spreading germs from your hands to your eyes, leading to infections like conjunctivitis. For people with glaucoma, pressing on the eyes can also raise eye pressure, which may worsen the disease over time.

So what should you do instead? If your eyes feel itchy, try using lubricating eye drops (artificial tears). For allergy-related itching, antihistamine eye drops can help. A cool compress over closed eyes is another safe way to relieve discomfort. Most importantly, wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your eyes whenever possible.

Protecting your eyes means protecting your vision. The simple step of breaking the habit of rubbing your eyes can go a long way in keeping them healthy for years to come.
